A trip down the Lower Gauley River is a rare adventure, as the trip only runs a few weeks each year. This river runs through the new River Gorge National Park, a vast expanse of 70,000 acres, full of lush scenery and various forms of wildlife. Now’s your chance to visit this historic river! You’ll first meet up at basecamp for a safety briefing and overview of the experience, before grabbing your paddle and donning your PFD (personal flotation device). After that, it’s a short, scenic trip to the launch site.
Before setting off, you’ll have the chance to practice your paddling skills. Then, it’s time to tackle the rapids. You’ll ride along with your expert guide, paddling through class III/IV rapids that few people get to see, let alone experience first-hand! As your heart pounds to the thrill of the bubbling river, you’ll be surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery, including vast rock formations and spectacular wildlife such as birds of prey, water birds, and even bald eagles. This river is steeped in history, including tales of the Native Americans, Civil War battles, and the creation of the famed Summersville Dam.
This 6-hour adventure includes a lunch, enjoyed along the river bank. Relax amid the sounds of wildlife, the wind in the trees, and the soothing tune of the river's movements.
